Golden rice is nutritionally enriched rice and is meant for biosynthesis of vitamin A.
Golden rice, a variety of Oryza sativa, is produced through genetic engineering to biosynthesize beta-carotene, a precursor of pro-vitamin A in the edible parts of rice. Golden rice is enriched by introducing three genes involved in the biosynthetic pathway for carotenoid. Thus, golden rice is genetically engineered rice with greater vitamin A content.
