KMnO4 acts as an oxidising agent. In neutral or faintly alkaline medium When alkaline KMnO4 is treated with KI, iodide ion is oxidised to iodate (IO3−) andKMnO4isreducedtoMnO2. The chemical reaction can be given as,
2KMnO4+H2O+KI→2MnO2+2KOH+KIO3
The change in oxidation state of manganese in this reaction is from +7to+4.
