Question

For the reaction $2\text{SO}_2(g) + \text{O}_2(g) \rightleftharpoons 2\text{SO}_3(g)$, $\Delta H = -198 \text{ kJ}$. Which condition favours the forward reaction?

Options

  1. A

    High temperature and low pressure

  2. B

    Low temperature and high pressure

  3. C

    High temperature and high pressure

  4. D

    Low temperature and low pressure

Solution

Applying Le Chatelier's Principle:

$$2\text{SO}_2(g) + \text{O}_2(g) \rightleftharpoons 2\text{SO}_3(g), \quad \Delta H = -198 \text{ kJ}$$

Temperature: $\Delta H < 0$ (exothermic) → low temperature favours forward.

Pressure: $\Delta n_g = 2 - 3 = -1$ → high pressure favours forward.

$$\boxed{\text{Low temperature and high pressure}}$$
