Biosphere
Explanation
The Earth is composed of four major constituent domains that interact with one another: the Lithosphere, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, and Biosphere.
- Lithosphere: The solid portion of the Earth, comprising the rocks of the crust and the thin layers of soil. While it provides a habitat, it does not independently support all life without the other domains.
- Hydrosphere: The domain comprising water in all its forms (ice, liquid water, and water vapor). It covers a large portion of the Earth's surface but is only one component required for life.
- Atmosphere: The gaseous layer surrounding the Earth that provides the air necessary for respiration and protects inhabitants from harmful solar radiation.
- Biosphere: This is the narrow zone of contact between the land (lithosphere), water (hydrosphere), and air (atmosphere). It is in this unique zone that life exists.
Key Takeaway: The Biosphere is the integrated zone where the Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, and Atmosphere interact to make life possible.
